MUSIC & MOVEMENT PROGRAM FOR PARENTS AND CHILDREN

Music & Me is a spirited music and movement program for parents and children, ages 6 months - 5 years, with a relaxed, playful orientation. We work in a large drum circle with many instruments, and sing and dance. In this setting we create an amazing sound environment, similar to many world music traditions. Amadinda, a large wood xylophone with its mellow pentatonic scale is placed in the center of the circle, available for anyone to join Marcia in playing. Around the circle we have African xylophones & drums, chromatic metal xylophones, triangles, Tibetan cymbals, chimes, kalimbas, gongs, shakers, castenets, bundt pans. We sing familiar folk and nursery school songs accompanied by guitar. In the latter part of class we move to an adjoining dance space, utilizing rhythm and dance along with the great world music CDs of today, culminating with parachute play. The children take small steps in their awareness of music, rhythm, tonality, and social development. We have no expectations of children performing; we simply have fun.
Music & Me is offered in Hamden, Shelton, Woodbury & Middlebury. Each section has about 8-12 families. It is a 45-minute weekly class that has an 8 or 10-week fall, winter, and spring semester, and a 6-week summer session. Marcia's classes in Hamden meet at Christ Lutheran Church, with Monday classes and Saturday classes. Middlebury & Woodbury classes are sponsored by their city Rec Department. Shelton is sponsored by its Community Center. Families do not have to be residents of a town in order to sign up for classes. What makes us remember a scintillating moment in our early childhood? I remember the piano and other instruments that were put in my small hands to experiment with, and my mother singing and dancing with me. Experiences in childhood often set us off into creative directions in later years. I was a public kindergarten teacher in my first profession. After further music training, I founded the early childhood program Music & Me in the New Haven area. In Music & Me I introduce simple songs and rhythmic patterns on xylophone or guitar, as the children move about the circle collecting or playing instruments while absorbing sounds and music at their own pace. We simply have fun. This class makes us passionate for music and dance exploration for our whole lives as we become the new music of tomorrow.
